5 r128 system lockup - ID: 577557
Last Update: Comment added ( nobody )

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 with an "ATI Technologies
Inc Rage Mobility M4 AGP" video card integrated (as
reported by lspci).

I had been using a RedHat distro with XFree 4.0x and
had DRI working nicely, but I've recently switched to
Gentoo with XFree86 4.2 and kernel 2.4.18 and now if I
use DRI, the whole system locks up solid when switching
from a text VT back to the X VT (via the alt-F7 key combo).

I've installed the the current (20020703) dri package
(had to
because of the r128 version mismatch problem with
XFree86 4.2) and glxgears works and reports 700+ fps.

Anyone have any ideas what might be going on or some
things I might try to work around the problem (other
than not switching VTs :-) ?

There are lots of R128 messages in the XFree86 startup
log... I don't understand what most of them are and
none look like errors.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Pedro

Sorry, actually the system does NOT lock... only X does (I
was confused by the fact that sshd wasn't running and I
couldn't get in).

I can log in remotely and forceably kill X, but I don't ever
get the console back, so I have to shutdown anyway (better
than cutting the power, though). Is there any way to get
linux to restart the console?
