If an archive is created in slices and the slices are stored in different locations ( for example on individual DVDs ) DarGUI is unable to display the contents of the archive unless the first and last slices are copied to the same directory on a hard drive.

This happens because Dar needs both the first and last slices of an archive in order to be able to list the contents of the archive. A future version of DarGUI will give users the option of inserting a disc containing the final slice.

Meanwhile, there is a fairly simple workaround.

When creating an archive that you want to store on multiple CDs or DVDs, create slices which are just under half the size of your DVD or CD so that you can save two slices onto each disc. Then save the first and last slice onto the same disc. You will then be able to examine the archive contents using DarGUI and select files to restore. The Dar console will request any other slices which contain the files.

No longer applies when used with dar version >= 2.4.0
