Web Servers where yapig works (free or not)

  1. 2004-02-11 19:17:35 UTC
Maybe new yapig users are searching a good Web hosting where they can test and store their online galleries.

So if you are already using yapig or you know any host where yapig will work post it :D

Exaple: http://www.lycos.com (free, 50mb, awful ad frame, ftp)

Well, I'm using YaPiG on http://koti.mbnet.fi which is hosted by Finnish computer magazine Mikrobitti, so it's not the first choice for users all over the world.

But, with free web hosting there's some times safe mode. First I tried version 0.83 of YaPiG and it installed very easily and worked nicely. Then I noticed that there's also version 0.91 and it has the feature I just needed: uploading images with browser. So I updated, but with php safe mode, install.php won't work. So I had to create SECURE_DIR myself and little customize install scripts (convert error()-lines to msg()-lines :).

What I mean is that you could do there a thingie that checks if there's safe mode on and shows manual installation guide if it's, else automatic installation.

Well, I test yapig on a more or less standard php config and I didn't check safe mode stuff, in fact, I didn't know that there was that problem. That's why I decided to add the unstable branch witch includes new features and that's why I encourage people that, like you, tests these new versions on different systems with different configs to post these kinds of things on the bugtrack system. Thank you.

I have been able to install YaPig on http://www.1and1.com. A few months back they were running a promo where they were giving away professional hosting for 3 years for FREE! The only hitch is that the GD Library they have is 1.6 but it incorrectly reports it as 2.x and thumbnail creation fails. I updated the 2.x calls to 1.6 calls and then wrote a perl script that uses NetPBM to create the thumbnails. So I first add a gallery and let Yapig create the thumbnails (which have only 256 colors) and then run my perl script to replace the thumbnails with full-color thumbnails created using NetPBM. Works like a charm for me!

    Check it out at http://www.mahesh.net/gallery

My webhost is hostrocket (hostrocket.com) and I had no problems installing Yapig. It isn't free, but you get a lot of space for a fair price and pretty good customer support.

I've currently got YaPig hosted on http://streamline.net
which is the UKs largest hosting provider, its not free but its relatively cheap, and the support is excellent.

I tried 3 or 4 other image galleries before i found YaPig and YaPig is the only one that worked!

I've gotten Yapig to work on shared hosting at Dreamhost, although it took a bit of figuring out, let me know if you need help.
