Xfce is an easy-to-use and easy-to-configure desktop environment using the popular GTK+ toolkit.
Nice and simple yet does what you want. My current No.1 desktop.
Thx guys!! Xfce is an amazing piece of software. Fast, reliable, usable, just what a desktop should be like and not more. I'd say: design goals achieved 100%!
gggg
Some consider Xfce to be "Gnome lite". But I think a more accurate description is "Gnome Optimized". Xfce strives to maintain a user-friendly environment, an essential component for winning over everyday users who are curious about Linux but might be turned off by something that looks too foreign or complicated. Yet for all its simplicity, it incorporates some decent features. I do hope they continue to pursue the goal of remaining lightweight yet full featured. I believe partnering with LXDE, Scintilla, and Gnome will be essential to furthering this goal. In the meantime, if you feel Mousepad is just too plain but don't want to add 100 MB for Gedit, check out Geany or Beav. You may want to add Gnome Commander or PcManFM as a companion to Thunar for file management. And using Mozilla Seamonkey for web, email and calendar applications within Xfce just seems logical. If done right, you can configure Xfce to be a full featured desktop with all the bells and whistles and still keep the whole thing under 3 GB, and must if you're planning on running it from in a virtual machine on a live DvD or Pen drive.
