Xappland allows novice programmers (and even non-programmers) to create their own web-based, multi-player games. All games are coded in Jython, which is a version of Python that is compatible with the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), and Jython is implemented in Java. SmartFoxServer (the game server used by Xappland) uses Java as the server-side language and various languages (including Adobe ActionScript, used by Xappland) for the client-side language. All Xappland games use the same server-side script, which incorporates the game-specific Python script. The client-side code simply processes mouse clicks and keystrokes, and in the default animation framework updates the display 3 times per second. More advanced animation frameworks will eventually be developed.
The Xappland project will be funded from ads displayed on the users' home pages, as well as from transaction fees, along with web hosting fees for the most popular games (most game designers will pay no web hosting fees).
