Treepie does appear to have its usefulness - I like how fast it scans the drive, so it is a good tool to use to locate large directories quickly.
However, it lacks a vast amount of the breadth of WinDirStat. TreePie cannot break the drive usage out by file type or give percent or size based info of total usage by folder/file. If I had to choose one or the other, I'd definitely choose WinDirStat as TreePie leaves too much capability out (I can get the same info with WinDirStat - in a more intuitive view - it just takes longer). But I will probably use both, since the quick visualization that TreePie does is great for when one file (like a log file) is filling most of a disk. When its a bunch of files spread all over the disk, TreePie fails miserably.
I think some sort of quick visualization like this would be a nice feature to add to WinDirStat (perhaps in the Select Drives dialog). Perhaps even better, have a checkbox in the selection dialog that allows a "Scan at folder level only" option to be enabled, and then the context menu "Refresh Selected" option could be used to get file level details only where needed.
