Wiki-Map Beta 0.1 Version is released. This is a collaborative map server based on GoogleMap API. Wiki-Map uses GoogleMap (TM) as its base and allows group of users to add their own feature. It also helps sharing of location information with location URL.
WikiMap is a free open source collaborative Geographic Information Knowledge-base tool to enable community participation in information generation, processing and dissemination. It will enable local participation to create GIS database in areas presently not covered adequately. This will be useful for proper planning, navigation, collaboration by different agencies. This will also make possible to integrate small bits of information to a comprehensive information base. Features: Prime feature of the project is a GIS knowledge repository and server. It is currently based on Google Map as its base map. It uses Google Map to provide a consistent reference and user interface to enable data collection. In future scope of WikiMap will be expanded to use any web based map server. By using a world map as base map WikiMap allows integration of local detailed information into remotely located knowledgebase. This will enable seamless navigation and sharing of information. Currently WikiMap is in beta phase. WikiMap demo has been moved out of SourceForge. This was nacessery to enable installation of some software nacessery for heavy duty data crunching. Demo site for WikiMap can be found at http://www.wikimap.biz. WikiMap is ready to take input from users and render the stored information Map with various level of details on Map. WikiMap makes use of Google Map API for this. Apart from data repository wikimap allows one to share location information and calculate distance covered by a route. Anyone can use the location sharing and route measurement tools; knowledge updation is restricted to registered users of the site. This is enforced to eleminate uncontrolled, bogus frivilous information being submitted in the knowledgebase. Registration is free, but as this gets some kind of checking mechanism it is expected to keep a control on quality of the information. Anybody can submit knowledge in form of location information, road or area mark in WikiMap knowledge repository after an easy registration. User submissions are however subjected to peer review and peer modification, in the wiki style.
