Whorld 1.7 is now available for download. This latest release includes some major new features, most notably the addition of global parameters, which enable new forms of dynamic real-time control. Whorld generates a series of rings, each of which is born, evolves over time, and eventually dies off. When the user changes a parameter in Whorld, the changes apply only to rings born after the change is made; pre-existing rings are unaffected. User changes thus have a tendency to propagate through the image gradually. This ripple effect is an essential part of Whorld's default look. A global parameter corresponds to a regular parameter, and has the same effect, except that it operates on all existing rings at once. For example, Global Aspect Ratio is identical to Aspect Ratio, except that it stretches the entire image, not just new rings. This looks dramatically different, and gives much more immediate user feedback. Global parameters were originally developed for use with the Nintendo Wiimote, as part of the ongoing WiiWhorld project, though they will work with any MIDI controller. The video below shows WiiWhorld in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bw1bHVPHk_g&hl=en WiiWhorld consists of both hardware (Wiimote, PC with bluetooth adapter) and software (Whorld 1.7, MIDI Yoke, GlovePIE, WiiWhorld GlovePIE script). All of the software is free. Instructions for downloading and configuring the software are available here: http://www.beatfix.com/blog/ Whorld 1.7 also introduces two new curve parameters - Even and Odd Shear - which, when combined with Even and Odd Curve, allow you to make asymmetrical Bzier curves. A short video is available which demonstrates the new curves, as well as global parameters: http://whorld.org/movies/GlobalWhorld.mpg New versions of the Whorld Freeframe plugins are also available. UltraWhorld 1.1 includes the global parameters and Even/Odd Shear. WhorldFF 1.3 supports Even/Odd Shear, but not the global parameters.
