Finally made it!!! Quite sure the reason it took so long for me to get there was my own mental disconnect on things. Have it talking to MySQL just fine, build went perfectly this time no issues at all. Branding docs are clear and concise and it's working very well. My problem with the DB is that I was trying to do the ReadmeSQL on top of the general setup not realizing that was only needed if I was going to be using my own db and not the one that comes with the code. Once I figured that out and changed the security xml back in the web.xml file and edited/moved the sample mysql.xml file in place it came up clean. Thank you again for all of your help!!
