I liked the FEN format, once I wrapped my mind around it, that way you have a snapshot of the board at any given time.
I had written a migration script to migrate from the old DB format to the new one (written in php, but I ran it using the command line). I'm not sure how applicable that code would be to others, as it was actually from benjam's alpha-> the beta 2.0, and he had an update...

Yeah, one of the major changes between my version 1.x and my version 2.x was a pretty major DB overhaul.
The major reason for the DB overhaul, was it was a bit easy for the DB to become corrupted with conflicting information being stored in two different places. So I combined both the history table and the pieces table into one (called history on mine) that stored each move as a complete...

To be totally honest, one of the things I wanted to do when I last had some time, was precisely to merge:
- The current WebChess version.
- Benjam's version.
- Nathan's n8chessnet.
- A bunch of patches.
But since we're at it.. I frankly don't think I'll be able to do it anytime soon.
