VeraCrypt is a free disk encryption software brought to you by IDRIX (http://www.idrix.fr) and that is based on TrueCrypt.
It adds enhanced security to the algorithms used for system and partitions encryption making it immune to new developments in brute-force attacks.
It also solves many vulnerabilities and security issues found in TrueCrypt.
This enhanced security adds some delay only to the opening of encrypted partitions without any performance impact to the application use phase. This is acceptable to the legitimate owner but it makes it much more harder for an attacker to gain access to the encrypted data.
For example, where TrueCrypt uses 1000 iterations of PBKDF2 to encryption system partition, VeraCrypt uses 327661. And for encrypted volume, TrueCrypt uses at most 2000 iterations whereas veraCrypt uses 500000.
VeraCrypt storage format is INCOMPATIBLE with TrueCrypt format.
Linux/MacOSX releases are PGP signed with key ID=0x54DDD393 available on key servers.
- Available for Linux, MacOSX (10.6+) and Windows.
- Increased security and many vulnerabilities fixed compared to TrueCrypt
Excellent fork from truecrypt. Same functionalities and multi platform support and better algorithms for encryption.
To be accepted like the predesscesor truecrypt, will pass a long time, but hope it will be, and not serious bugs will be found. Congrats to the developer for enhacing the key generations througth stronger hashes implementations. Thanks for your excellent work.
Well, this project is in fact based on TrueCrypt. But, while TC uses some aged algorithmic parameters, VeraCrypt adapts them to a more recent context, improving security vastly. The developers reacted quickly on my problem report, so thumbs up!!
