Ubuwiki Offline, a South African, open-source software package geared towards the Ubuntu operating system, has been launched. The release of the package, Ubuwiki for Africa coincided with Software Freedom day (20-09-2008). Software Freedom is celebrated around the world as a result of Richard Stallman and the Free Software Foundations call for free software: "When we call software free, we mean that it respects the users' essential freedoms: the freedom to run it, to study and change it, and to redistribute copies with or without changes. This is a matter of freedom, not price, so think of free speech, not free beer." - Richard Stallman. Ubuwiki Offline is an intermediate technology solution for Africa where low-bandwidth and high-cost of Internet make communication unaffordable for the majority. Ubuwiki contains a digest of information Ubuwiki Live - to get Ubuntu-users started in the absence of broad-band Internet. It is an African solution -- a derivative of the XHTML platform created by the open-source Wiki on a Stick (WoaS) project, which exists entirely in a self-contained file, allowing users to edit and change live content to suit their individual needs. The Indlovu Project responsible for the South African WoaS distribution, agrees that WoaS-type digital bundles are the way to go in terms of offering computer users an alternative format that respects the needs of human-beings. Think of Ubuwiki as an MP3 for files and data -- If the only digital music available was via streaming audio, computer users would naturally rebel and find a way of saving the information offline. We believe Ubuwiki is the answer to capped and shaped data, since it allows users to edit and build pages offline in situations in which there is no internet readily available, and in keeping with the spirit that is the basis of Ubuntu, the application is shared by the community. * Ubuwiki Live * Ubuwiki for Africa * Ubuwiki Offline are licenced under the GNU/GPL as well as the Creative Commons, and other licences affecting various aspects of copyright and trademark.
