TopoGen is a small PyGTK application which will make a topographic image overlay for Google Earth using the given coordinate boundaries.

You will need to install the PyGtk development environment to run it. more info here: http://aruiz.typepad.com/siliconisland/2006/12/allinone_win32_.html EXE direct link: http://osl.ulpgc.es/~arc/gnome/pygtk-setup.exe
In addition to the PyGtk GUI there is also a command line version.
This project came about after my frustration with 3dsolar's Topo map overlay KMZ for Google Earth and the fact that the USGS topo maps are not available as a layer in Google Earth. This program pulls the maps from terraserver USA and saves them locally inside a KMZ file. That way you can work with it offline. You can also specify the size (boundaries) of the intended topo overlay. This is a python script using pyGtk and glade for the GUI. It should run on any OS where python will run as long as all of the dependencies are installed. I plan on making a standalone package for windows users as well as making several improvements to make it generally easier to work with.
