I prefer to figure out the most optimal solution than provide
configuration options. And I'm still not convinced that a "next" or
"previous" station function is needed. If users want to play another
station they can always display the station manager and select the
station they want to listen to.

That's an interesting perspective. Most usability literature I have read
argue otherwise.

This feature is only for application windows. Not widgets like buttons,
comboboxes or lists. For example if you move your cursor over a button,
it won't activate it.

You hit the nail on the head. I too think VLC's approach is complicated
and hard to use. Unfortunately, I don't see how I can improve on it.
There's so many stations to choose from that one feels overwhelmed. I
think it is better to let users add and manage radio stations
themselves. It's less complicated and easier to use. It also has the
advantage that only radio stations users want are installed.
