7-Zip 4.59 beta

  1. 2008-08-13 07:45:53 UTC
    7-Zip 4.59 beta was released.

    What's new after 7-Zip 4.58 beta:
    - 7-Zip now can unpack UDF, XAR and DMG/HFS archives.
    - 7-Zip File Manager now keeps encryption when you edit encrypted file inside archive.
    - 7-Zip File Manager now allows to change current folder from the address bar drop-down list.
    - It's allowed to use -t switch for "list" and "extract" commands.
    - Some bugs were fixed.
    - New localizations: Icelandic, Kurdish Sorani.

any idea on when it is going final , I know i know when it's ready , but still :)

If there are no bugs, it will be soon. Probably I will not include new big features that can delay release version.
So I just wait responses for that beta version.

I've been looking at the Tracker/Feature Requestion section and I think it would be great to see a roadmap of the development effort... there are a lot of feature requests that have been given the same "priority".

    Good work, very good soft!
Thank you for your work, Igor!
But some iso-images with UDF can't be extracted:
    VS2008SP1ENUX1512962.iso (Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 SP1),
    VS2008SP1MSDNENUX1506188.iso (MSDN Library for Visual Studio 2008 SP1) ->
    README.TXT:
This disc contains a "UDF" file system and requires an operating system
that supports the ISO-13346 "UDF" file system specification.

These UDFs contain embedded data streams (data embedded to directory records).
Next version of 7-Zip will support such UDFs. Thanks!

The inevitable has occurred! Encryption is now kept after updating file in archive. Thank you! But it doesn't seem to work good in FAR plugin yet. The encryption is completely lost after editing files inside archive or coyping files into archive with "Add and replace files" option (default). Other options keep file encryption but not file name encryption. Waiting for new version. Anyway, thanks!

Until now I don't have tested 4.59 beta.
But the new feature: "7-Zip File Manager now allows to change current folder from the address bar drop-down list." is the best development since a long time!!!

    regards

    Igor, thanks for new beta!

Please fix a minor issue in archive information dialog:
    http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=2151655&forum_id=45797

Problem is still not fixed in 4.59 beta.

    Best regards,

MS VC++ 9.0 SP1 compiler had been released. Igor, please try to use it in future builds. It may be slightly better than RTM one.
  11. 2008-08-18 09:54:14 UTC
Igor, please update Japanese language file with that one in future versions: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=2057249&group_id=14481&atid=314481

    Thank You!

The shell extension "7-zip.dll" isn't included with the .exe installer. But it is included with the MSI installer. Is that intentional?

    Hello everyone,

    > The shell extension "7-zip.dll" isn't included with the .exe installer. But it is included with the MSI installer. Is that intentional?

I suppose you unpacked the Exe-installer with some "unpacker". So did I and it _was_ included there. The only point was, I had to rename it by hand. Look into the exe-installer with 7-zip (unpack it). You will find a file with three or four strange characters. Right-click on it and choose "Properties"... You will see :-)
At least that was true for _me_ (for the last 10 or 20 betas...)
WinXP, SP3 (also under SP2), Athlon 1700+, 512 MB RAM Nothing special, but reliable ;-)

    Best regards!

Will it be possible to add a new unzip option -aon, (like -aoa), where
the extract skips older files and overwrites only newer files?

I need the option to unzip/extract and replace only "Newer" files.
Therefore if the existing file already exists it should not be
overwritten if the date/time stamp is older.

    Thanks, John

Yes but please without additional msvcr circus.

Thanks. I just renamed the $R0 file to "7-zip.dll".

I wish there was a .zip (or .7z) release of 7-zip that includes all the parts that the .exe and .msi include.

I use macro for 7-zip.dll to support REBOOT if that file locked in 7-zip.nsi (NSIS):
    !insertmacro InstallLib DLL NOTSHARED REBOOT_NOTPROTECTED 7-zip.dll $INSTDIR\7-zip.dll $INSTDIR

It's more difficult to extract with original names for such macros.
