7-Zip 4.59 alpha 3

  1. 2008-06-24 08:45:57 UTC
    7-Zip 4.59 alpha 3 was released.

    7-Zip for 32-bit Windows:
    http://www.7-zip.org/alpha/7z459a3.exe

    7-Zip for 64-bit Windows x64:
    http://www.7-zip.org/alpha/7z459a3-x64.msi

    What's new after 7-Zip 4.59 alpha 2:
    - 7-Zip now can unpack UDF and XAR archives.
    - It's allowed to use -t switch for "list" and "extract" commands.
    - Some bugs were fixed.

    Some additional notes.
7-Zip now supports only some simple UDF archives. If you have unsupported UDF archive, write me.

Some examples of -t switch from Help File:

    7z t -t7z.split archive.7z.001
tests all files in archive.7z.001. It also checks that archive is multivolume .7z archive.

    7z x -tiso archive.iso
extracts files from archive.iso open as ISO archive.

    7z x -tudf archive.iso
extracts files from archive.iso open as UDF archive.

A big THANKS for the UDF format !

Now only if you'll be kind enough to add a "Show extracted files when complete" option that will be GREAT !
It should be easy (and very, very useful option) something like "explorer.exe %target%" AFAIK :)

I suppose I've fixed that bug. Check that you use latest version of 7z.dll. Write to that thread, if you still see that bug.

    To all:
Please check that 7-Zip can open/test/extract your UDF archives.
Check also that it opens these archives as UDF (not as ISO):
    - You can use -tudf switch in command line version.
    - You can press "Info" button when archive is open in 7-Zip File Manager.
    Please report here about results.

About XAR. Probably it's not to useful now. But at least Apple uses it sometimes. For example, iPhone SDK actually is multilevel archive - DMG/HFS/XAR/GZIP/CPIO.

Maybe some RPM packages use XAR also. If you know any RPM package with XAR inside, write the link here.

And 7-Zip now can split Apple's universal binaries to PPC and X86 parts.

I can confirm that UDF files created with oscdimg.exe tool from Microsoft Windows AIK using either /u1 or /u2 UDF command options, can be "open/extracted as UDF (not as ISO)" :)
