I suggest that this autosaving and naming behaviour operates in exactly the same way when the file contents are shorter than 80 chars as when they're longer.

To clarify, in either case the filename is updated based on the first 80 chars of contents in the file. In the case of a file with less than 80 chars these first 80 chars will be changing frequently because as the user adds text they're adding to the first 80 chars. If the file contents are longer then the user adding and editing text will usually not change the first 80 chars. Either way, the autosave behaviour would be the same.

Also it just occured to me that any whitespace (e.g. blank lines) at the start of a file would need to be ignored when generating the content preview for the filename. Files that contain only one or two characters followed by a lot of whitespace might present a problem. I suggest that any sequence of whitespace characters, be it multiple spaces in a row, tabs, several blank lines in a row, etc. be converted to a single _ and count as one character in the 80-character content preview.
