  • Panel desappeared after installation

I've installed Scibuntu( 2.1-alfa) on Ubuntu 8.10 but all icons and tools desappeared. Now I have only the background screen. How do I recover the my regular gnome panel? (p.s. gnome-panel command gives the message 'Cannot open display'.)

  • Followup: RE: A good page with links to more programs

Do all of the programs listed on the first ubuntu wiki come included with scibuntu? As I am a social scientist (psychologist in training, actually) I'm wondering, can I have the option of just installing the statistics and reference managing programs from the install .iso?.

  • GENtle

Perhaps the Vector NTI alternative GENtle ( http://gentle.magnusmanske.de/ ) could be packed for SciBuntu? The proprietary Vector NTI has been an important tool for basically every molecular biologist due to its free academic licence. Recently, Invitrogen has however changed its licencing terms for the next version and lots of scientists are quite angry... I feel that GENtle is quite mature...

  • OpenFOAM

for those that are in fluid dynamics and various other areas OpenFOAM is a real treat and it it open source, it is part of the CAELinux distro based on PCLinuxOS. It would be nice to have that ported into Scibuntu (ubuntu). Actyually porting it is not the problem, it already is compatible though the instalation can be a little difficult for those who are not exactly linux savy. CAELinux...

  • Comment: Add SCILAB and VisualTCL

I agree, Scilab is a must for pretty much everyone related to science.

  • Comment: Add Salstat?

Isn't all of this functionality in R? And in a far more stable and well-tested form? If you like Python, the RPy package would help your Python code work nicely with R. Ubuntu should have no shortage of Python experts to help get that going. -- Chuck.

  • Comment: FREEMAT

According to a WebSVN site in Germany, FreeMAT has been debianised. Octave is another candidate. -- Chuck http://svn.recluse.de/filedetails.php?repname=debian&path=%2Ftrunk%2Fpackages%2Ffreemat%2Fdebian%2Fcopyright&rev=245&sc=1 Quote: debian [/] [trunk/] [packages/] [freemat/] [debian/] [copyright] - Rev 245 Compare with Previous - Blame...

  • typo on front page of project site

Sentence: "It is a script that adds scientific programs and other convinient tools to the plain desktop Ubuntu." Change: "convinient" to "convenient" I'll look for more typos and rough spots in the English grammar or style, if that will help you out. -- Cheers! Chuck.
