I found the problem.
When run scantwain or xsane, the Kodak driver requires to create a directory tree under /var ie /var/kodak.
When run as a normal user, the user does not have permission to write to /var therefore all the scanning software crashed.
However, if I first run as root and chmod the /var/kodak and sub directories to readable/writeable/executeable (full permission) for.

When run as normal user, scantwain got segmentation fault during startup (before selection of scanner).
However, when first start up as root (not crash) and selected the scanner, then run as normal then able to select the scanner and scan without any problem.
