This is a bug that Ubuntu has recognized. When they fix it, we will be able to update. This does not block updtes in general, just updates to splashy and lsb. In the update manager, just unselect the lsb package.

This is not a bug. :-) The root password is not set, you need to use sudo to perform root actions.
