SAGA is a free geographic information system (GIS), with a special 'Application Programming Interface' (API) for geographic data processing. This API makes it easy to implement new algorithms. The SAGA API supports grid data, vector data, and tables.
Best open-source Gis
I am using SAGA since 2006 and it is great!
I was looking for a free GIS to try something out, as a beginner, and I got best started with this one. I tried also QGIS, GRASS and MapWindow. The interface of SAGA is better, plot adjustment is easier, it rarely crashes, opens my ASCII data easily, does not require a complicated directory structure like GRASS, and it does not even ask me to give file names when I create derived layers, it just creates it after which you can decide later to save or not. It's great! A downside is the absent documentation which prevents from using the program more effectively, but this may be less of an issue if someone is well known with GIS terms and procedures.
