River is a group of almost two hundred tiny, recombinant programs that have successfully combined to make useful apps. The River is being moved to open source. We have 60+ proglets moved, starter application packages, directory navigation and ...

The first visible River app is viewable at http://www.lccdigital.com/tabl2frm It takes a really poorly designed NOAA data page and makes it something usable, a smart snip here, an paste there, and an insert or two, et voil! Here's the original http://www.cpc.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/cdus/degree_days/hfstwpws.txt and again, here's the River notes: http://www.lccdigital.com/tabl2frm
In '98 I opened a 40K DOC file and Word took a long time to get around to it. This resulted in the very first River module, set last access time. Having reset all files I opened Word again and it needed to access 250Meg to display a 40K message. I am sure it is far worse by now. Do you know of Daneel? If not, 'he' is a fictional, extremely intelligent android. Daneel would be ROTFL at loading 250Meg to read 40K. Well the River does not have the DOC displayer yet I know how to do it, just have not had time, and besides, DOC formats are opening up. But the River does have many dozens of small, recombinant programs that can do many things, faster, more easily and using far fewer resources than any integrated app.
WebLogs.zip is an application pack that lets you massage raw access logs into more user friendly information. River approaches are valuable when you want information from the logs that utilities do not give you, or when you just want to do it youeself for better control, or to combine logs from different systems into one log format. Available on the download page.
