Qdig - Quick Digital Image Gallery

I was wondering if there was anyway of incorporating a simple fade between images. There are a lot of simple javascripts that can do this but I wouldn't know how to add them as a new function.
Or maybe it might be easier to just include a fade out/in gif over the top of the images as they change?

I'm happy to play around with this but my javascript knowledge is pretty basic so I could do with some pointers to the key bits of code.
