PrBoom is an excellent port that preserves "compatibility bugs" for demo play yet adding features that extend it to one of the best doom ports out there. You can run it in compatible mode (with bugs) or use it with all of the features turned on for a treat. It's fast, compatible and free. I've used it with several versions of the doom and doom2 wad with no problems. I've used it with boom compatible wads and it is amazing. I started using this back when CPH was working on LXDoom and I transitioned from that to PrBoom when the merge happened. This was the easiest port to get working with Linux as it embraced Linux and FOSS. The developers have always fixed problems between their real life and this FOSS project and they'd done an amazing job.

just wanted to say well done on this project guys! have only just heard of prboom today during a boredom induced random search through repositories and being a once addicted fan of doom upon its original outing [it was used as a pacifier by our teachers on acorn computers!] was overcome with respect and amazement to find this piece of FPS history is still being kept alive other than through emulating. had installed prboom onto a linux [backtrack] partition-and had a run through the game before stopping to email the link of prbooms project page to a windows user in the family who will no doubt appreciate it fondly like many of us from that era to. an appreciative thumbs up and thanks, for prboom!
