How is the performance on VGA-PDAs?

Can anyone comment how fast PocketUAE runs on PocketPCs with VGA-Displays? (XScale 513Mhz or better; Windows Mobile2003 SE)

I want to buy a new PDA and i am not sure, if VGA-PDAs are fast enough for such applications.

Hmmm, I can't say that it runs any slower than my iPaq4150(400MHz) compared to my VGA Axim x50v (624MHz). I can tell you that having the ability to run the Amiga in full resolution is so much more sweater than simple QVGA mode though. The only drawback is that UAE does not automatically detect a VGA device and run in that mode. You have to actually, reboot your PDA in full VGA and then run the application to take advantage of this higher quality mode.

Also, I just would like to comment on the "slowness" of VGA devices compared to the standard Pocket PC's. They aren't slow when running a program that natively takes advantage of VGA. But, because many of the PocketPC programs out there were designed for the lower resolution, the newer VGA devices have to do a special quadrupeling effect on the pixels of a program to get them to display correctly. Well, the overhead of doing this trick is usually what causes the slowness to occur.

So what kind of performance loss has to be expected in such situations? 50%

Just guessing, but the newer devices have some sort of gfx chip built in, which probably does the sizing in hardware. There are, however, applications which do not run well in true vga, virtual pool f.e., it renders at full size, but the program still uses 320x240 for clicking and such.

Actually, there is a new version of virtual pool that is coming out that is full VGA. I believe it also takes advantage of 3D graphic chips such as the one that is built into the Axim X50v unit. (sorry, I know this topic doesn't really belong in this Amiga Emulator forum)
