Because there's some rogue version of echo on OSX that doesn't recognize -n, even though /bin/echo does.
Tangential note/bug: I had to run autoreconf -f or libtool complained at link time. The tarball apparently isn't very compatible.

hmm, submitting comment didnt work the first time... so I'll try it again...
same here, I try to track the problem down using "Sysinternal File Monitor"... All dlls are loaded sucessfully from the basedir of pioneers and hill.png was accessed successfully. Here are the most important parts (you might better copy/paste that log into a texteditor...):

And one more thing: the hill.png opens ok also in Gimp.

Forgot to mention one thing:
I tried to install to both D:\IG\Pioneers and default location C:\Program Files\Pioneers, the same result.

I'm having the same problem.
I have
Pioneers version 0.12.2
Windows XP sp3 (with automatic updates)
Dll:s required are from newest gimp package gimp-2.6.7-i686
There is no difference whether I start Pioneers from shortcut made by setup or if I start command prompt, cd to istallation directory and run pioneers.exe from command line.
The hill.png is under the installation directory with working...

Since svn 1491 (0.12.4) the editor can modify the nosetup nodes.
