The script has undergone a major overhaul and is ready again in beta version. User authentication is now handled by sessions rather than cookies. Several new security features were also added.
The program, written in PHP, allows web site operators to offer visitors a profile page on their site with their own URL. Profile pages can be customized as to color and font. A rating system allows visitors to the profile to leave a rating. Members may upload a picture, create a blog, bookmarks and enter and edit text. Administration is easy and very flexible. This release allows the site owner to use either graphic ads, Google Adsense or both. A working demo is available at http://phpprofiles.linuxwebshop.com to try it out!
Version 3.8 addresses the register_globals issue. With this release, the script will work with regoster_globals either on or off. The Community area has also been improved. The Administrator may now appoint Moderators and create Topics. For more details, please visit: http://linuxwebshop.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=199
Version 3.7 of the popular community building program phpProfiles has been released. The script package allows site owners to offer visitors a web page on their site with their own URL. When a visitor registers, they may create a profile page with a variety of options. Members have their own blog and may create bookmarks on their page. Members may upload a picture to compliment their profile. The Administrator sets up communities that members may join to interact with other members. Members may communicate through an on-site message system and create friend relationships. A guest book feature allows members to leave a comment on a profile page. An installation routine sets up the MySQL database and creates the profiles directory. Since the script creates the profiles directory, it is able to create profile directories under it without the directory being universally writable. In this release, the content for the profile pages was moved out of the profile directory to make it easier for the end-user to make modifications if desired. Code was also added to included files so they cannot be accessed directly for better security. The script was written for UNIX variant servers and requires PHP 4.x and MySQL 4.x. There is a working demo of the new release at: http://phpprofiles.linuxwebshop.com so interested parties can take a test drive! The script's home page is located at: http://linuxwebshop.com/phpprofiles.php and there are download links there.
Version 3.5 of the popular community building project has been released. phpProfiles allows site owners to offer visitors a profile page with its own URL on their site. Members may personalize their page with their choice of colors and fonts. Each Member has their own blog and may set up bookmarks on their page along with personal information and a picture. The new release no longer relies on universally write-able directories. This release has an installation routine that writes the directories and files that are needed for the profile creation routine so they are owned by the http daemon. The script can create the Member's profile directory since it 'owns' the parent directory. This greatly enhances security since all directories now have the same permissions as most any web directory. A security issue with variables in include statements has also been addressed. The include statements now use absolute paths rather than variables. This release offers several new features for Members including onsite message system, friendship routine and search function. The administrative features have also been enhanced. The Administrator can change the look & feel on the fly, manage Members and their content, send a newsletter, ban by IP and much more! The Administrator now has the ability to change the profile field names. If, for example a 50 character field called 'School' is more appropriate to the site than a 2 character field called 'Age' the Administrator now has the ability to make the change. The program provides solid, captivating content that encourages return visits. Members spread the word and new visitors sign up to join the fun. One of the most common reasons to offer free content is to capitalize on affiliate advertising relationships. phpProfiles has a built in advertising rotation routine with easy to use management tools. A demo of the program is available on the script's Home Page at: http://linuxwebshop.com/scripts.php
