new install: 500 internal server error

    Well I found the problem. It was quite %^*$!! baffling...

    It's because I chmod 777'd the phpmyadmin directory

    It seems like there's some 'feature' of my web host that causes permissively permissioned php files to return 500 errors, I guess for security reasons.

    I was trying to avoid the inevitable "php can't write to directory" errors when installing but instead I stopped the whole thing from working!

    It's all fine now...
