Penny Pincher is a cross-platform, budget-oriented personal finance manager. Version 0.5.0 is the first publicly available release, and is now sufficiently functional for users to manage their finances with. The most unique feature of Penny Pincher is the ability to treat budget categories as virtual accounts. Money must be explicitly deposited into a budget category before it may be spent; likewise, spending money requires you to specify which budget category the money is coming from. Penny Pincher currently supports both a wizard-based and advanced interface for entering transactions. Multi-part transactions are also supported, along with the option to memorize and recall any entered transaction. Budgets may be managed ad-hoc, or on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annual basis. Major features still lacking in version 0.5.0 are filtering and reporting, and there are still many more wizard interfaces to be written. Further work on supporting other database backends (in addition to MySQL, PostgreSQL, and QED) needs to be done, as well. In spite of this, the program is functional and stable, albeit lacking in documentation at this point. Release 0.5.0 (source and binaries) can be downloaded from SourceForge at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=93772 .
