Mac OS X 10.3 installed but not bootable?

  1. 2004-05-11 15:01:20 UTC

Probably halfway offtopic: I went through installing MacOS X on a 3Gig Volume (I used Disk Utility to get a volume). But after the installer finished and rebooted I can't get it booting from it. With booting from CD1 I can use Start Up Disk to set it (it also detects the installation) but even than I am not able to boot it.

Any hint welcome. Even so: an awesome thingy!

    Does setting prom_bootmethod="select" help?
Maybe it is still booting from the install CD
  3. 2004-05-11 18:47:15 UTC
I have the same problem, install finished, it did its "reboot", but it wouldn't boot if I deconfigure the CD image. I tried select, but it didn't see the partition as bootable. It also never asked for CD2.

I tried pointing the cdrom to CD2 just so i'd have something in the virtual drive but it didn't boot then either. I restarted the setup with CD1, and it recognizes the install and says it wants to upgrade.

Same problem, and I try the option prom_bootmethod="select", but no results.

By the way, what is the correct file system to choose, in install ? Maybe this is the problem.
  5. 2004-05-12 00:20:27 UTC
Same thing for me, I put prom_bootmethod="select" but when I select the partition which is obviously the installed drive it does not accept that.

Apparently the documentation is partly wrong for MacOS because it did not recognize the Darwin made disk layout. Disk Utility couldn't even repair it.
  6. 2004-05-12 06:30:00 UTC
Same thing for me. Tried to to force mu img file but i got an error "Permission Denied".
  7. 2004-05-12 06:47:22 UTC
I had the same problem with image not being bootable after installation. Fixed it by downloading darwin and making a clean partition on the 6gb image provided on this site.

You still have to partition again when installing panther
  8. 2004-05-12 07:01:49 UTC
I couldnt install the 10.3. when i d like to chose the partition cames a error, that he cannt install os x on this partition because it isnt bootable
  9. 2004-05-12 07:48:35 UTC
use the disctool in panther install program to partition and make it bootable
  10. 2004-05-12 08:22:06 UTC
I did what you described with the 3Gig disk - first follow the Darwin partition description than go and install. The Mac OS installer could not recognize the Darwin partitioning - I needed to "repair" it on the "First Aid" tab. After that installation went fine.

I did not install all stuff (scrapped Asian Fonts and other languages), so it nicly fit (1.6 Gig left)

Can you describe more in detail how you make a partition bootable? The "Set Startup Disk" Utility also recognized my installed partition but when I set it, it does not boot it. Still confused ... That was easier on my iMac ;)
  11. 2004-05-12 12:28:21 UTC
Is there any easy way to make it bootable?
  12. 2004-05-12 12:54:59 UTC
You can make a partition booteable by going to the menu ->
"Installer" -> "Change Startup Disk..." and select the partition where you installed OSX. You can check if a partition is booteable by Ctrl-Click over the partition and selecting "information".

But... I have made this and it does not boot either. I guess that pearpc does not recognize OSX booteable partitions... :(
  13. 2004-05-12 12:59:03 UTC
i do the same thing but i had the same problem :-)
  14. 2004-05-12 13:55:29 UTC
Yes, another one with the same problem.
    But here's something interesting:
I launched the installer again, chose Installer->Startup Disk and the program detected the "bootable system" folder on the disk... so, I selected it, clicked the "Restart" button and ppc crashes... well... it quits with these messages:

Also, when launching the Startup Disk tool I get these messages on the installer log:
root: nvram: Error (-1) getting variable - 'boot device'
root: nvram: Error (-1) getting variable - 'boot device'
root: Could not parse output from /usr/sbin/nvram
(the messages are repeated several times)
And then it complains something about not being able to set the statup disk... I think it displays Disk(112) o Error Disk(-122)

If Tristan, the guy that submited the OSX desktop screenshot (http://pearpc.sourceforge.net/screenshots/osxbooted.png), could tell us how did he obtain it I would be a happier person :)

Same problem....installed fine (slowly, but fine), and now will not boot.

I had to "reboot" after partitioning to get it to install, and the disk tool shows the partition as bootable, but when I start the emulator (JIT version) it only offers the CD as bootable. I try to force it to boot from the hard disk, but it refuses to.

If there is a way to fix this without having to download Darwin, it would be greatly appreciated. I have both Yellow Dog and Gentoo for PowerPC...might either of those have the tools to help solve this?

My installation does boot but the finder seems to crash continously. It disappears (along with the dock at the bottom) and reappears every 5secs or so.
  18. 2004-05-13 11:38:49 UTC
OK Its working now. Luckily you dont need to reinstall OSX from scratch. It worked for me, but Im not sure (but a little confident) that it will work in all the cases, so if you doubt please make a backup copy of your current hard disk image just in case.

This is the way I fixed it:

1.- Download darwin (yes, Im sorry)
2.- Start pearpc using the installed OSX hd image as master and darwin iso as slave.
3.- Once darwin has stated drop to a shell by typing "shell"
    4.- Enter the "pdisk" commands
5.- As in the normal installation select type "e"
6.- Enter "/dev/disk0" as the name of the device.
7.- If you want to see how your partitions are mapped enter "p".
8.- Use r to swap partitions, you have to set the map partition as the first one (Im pretty sure that it already is the first one) and the OSX partition as the second one (it was placed third in my installation).
9.- Finally enter "w" in order to write the partition table.
10.- Now its fixed, and it will boot without problems. Just boot with the OSX disk 2 in you slave because the installation continues :)

I uploaded an screenshot to an old sf project of mine: http://phine.sourceforge.net/fix_osx.png

As this indeed makes installation go further for me, I wonder if replacing the partitions is really needed, or all that is needed is to replace the installation CDs. Could somebody comment on that?

Just replacing the installation CDs will resolve nothing.
I just remapped the partitions as kindly shared by antraxsoldier and it booted :)
I'm wondering if those that used the disk util of the Mac OS X Installer to create the partition had this issue.
I suppose using disk util of the Installer to create the partition, reboot the Installer afterwards and continue installation should be a clean install. Anyone care to comment?
  21. 2004-05-13 13:30:02 UTC
What you are suggesting is exactly what I did. Since I have nearly no previous knowledge of MacOS (X and not X), I went the straight way. After formatting the partition using the installer's Disk Utility, the partition had a "!" on it, saying that MacOS could not be installed on it. After rebooting, this was (accidentally) solved, but it resulted in the same partition table scheme as the one in antraxsoldiers's post.

Time Remaining: about 6 hours 32 minutes...

I guess I still don't know how to make the installer not install everythings. I really can't see iMovie working on this emulator as it is now.

i seem to be expirimenting the same problem as you arkay
  23. 2004-05-13 14:07:58 UTC
The same its happening here... :(
  24. 2004-05-13 15:01:06 UTC
I booted using the second CD because when I did it with the first one when OSX booted it asked me to insert the second CD in order to continue with the installation. As the change CD button didn't work I just booted using the second CD on the slave. That was what I tried to say at point 10

After partitioning my 3GB image with Darwin the Installer for MacOSX couldn't "see" the disk... so I partition it using Disk Utility, installed MacOSX and then used The "swap parition order" trick posted by Javier Lanatta (antraxsoldier) to make Apple_HFS the first partition.

    This worked perfectly!
    So... thank you Javier!
