As you have probably noticed, there has not been much activity around here lately. There are two reasons for this. The first is a new project I am involved with that is centered on open source software development for emergency services. The OpenISES (Open Information Systems for Emergency Services) Project (http://openises.sourceforge.net) is a site dedicated to helping expand the development and use of open source software and materials in the emergency service setting. There are sections for Emergency Management, EMS, Fire Service and Law Enforcement. We hope to begin adding training materials as well as open source software in the coming months. I would encourage you to take a look at the project and if so inclined, give us a hand. The second reason for the slowdown in the AED Program Manager is a review of what has been accomplished so far. We are looking at forking the project, both at the database and the front-end coding. At this time, it looks like the back-end database will be converted to MySQL. As far as the front end goes, we are still debating whether to utilize a 'web' interface using PHP or to try a variant of Visual Basic (such as Kbasic) that will allow us to write a front end that can be used on either Windows or Linux. As always, your thoughts on this are most welcome. Sorry for the slow down in the progress of the program. We haven't abandoned the work, only deferred it for a period of time. We hope you understand our reasons and agree with them. Thanks Bob
The eBook Writer for the Palm eBook Reader (https://sourceforge.net/projects/ebook-writer/) is the second in a series of software programs designed to assist emergency services agencies. The original program was developed to allow EMS agencies to convert their protocols into a format that could be read on a Palm Pilot PDA. This simple task resulted in Paramedics and EMTs no longer being required to carry heavy 2-inch binders full of protocols, but they could now have them at their fingertips in a lightweight, easy to carry and use, PDA. The project was started in 2002, and was created as a skeleton to simply get the job done. Development ceased shortly after the protocol project was completed. About two months ago, the project was pulled out of the back drawer and dusted off. The source code, in Visual Basic 6, has been uploaded into the CVS section of the SourceForge development page. A web site should be up and running shortly.
This is the first release of the PAD Program Manager, and as such it is very much a work in progress. There was some hesitation to release the software so early in the development cycle. However, it was felt that the positives of releasing the software, getting feedback and making incremental changes, would be far more beneficial than waiting to much later in the process when it may be much harder to make such changes. As it is an early release, many of the 'features' are not yet operational. Please review the ReadMe file to see what options are currently not functioning. Please review the ReadMe file, as some options must be set manually. It also has information on how to access the program. Again, this is a very early release, and is the basic framework of the program as outlined in the PAD Program Manager Milestone Schedule. We would recommend using it only on a machine that does not have critical functions on it, as we cannot attest to the safety or stability of the program. There is no security incorporated at this time, therefore it is not recommended that 'real' data be used. We thank you for reviewing the program, and look forward to your comments and suggestions.
