OpenSextant is a geotagging solution for unstructured text. It extracts geolocations from documents, ties those locations to places on the Earth, and formats the results in commonly used geospatial data formats, including KML, ESRI Shapefile, CSV, JSON or WKT . It identifies place names in documents as well as explicit coordinate expressions. OpenSextant is built on top of the GATE (http://gate.ac.uk/) open source text analytic software and incorporates software from a number of MITRE efforts. OpenSextant is a flexible and extensible tool that can be readily customized for specialized applications. It is an ideal platform for geotagging R&D efforts.
