  • I wonder why not everybody loves that project... mostly apple trolls... There is a comment in French were the guy says it uses it for more than a decade... and I agree. For a NAS, without fees, with a wide raid support, I haven't encountered anything like that... I even "repair" raids from branded servers such as syno ... and does a wonderful job. Wen I speak of ease of use in a world of raid servers... I do mean that I can use it w/o scratching my head using the CLI. Even link aggregation is easy to set-up to get a larger bandwidth... Now... I do not want to stigmatize people... but when you are an Apple user and cannot use this... well just use your wallet... or open your brain to learn old tricks and new stuff. And BTW... using SMB/CIFS between 2 UNIX based system is a bit nuts ... have you ever heard of NFS which is native in Linux and MacOs FreeBSD fork. NB: What OMV has some difficulties to do ... generally Webmin will do it easely
  • It works in theory, but in practice it’s really slow. I have it installed on a computer plugged directly into my router’s gigabit ethernet port. We have WiFi AX, but to transfer 300MB of files from my Macbook Pro A1 it says it would take 3 days! I have SSDs on both sides so i cannot imagine why it’s so slow.

  • Hi; I love this project it is easy if you do your research. youtube channels like DB Tech and technodad An technodad (listed in the forums under guides ) work with 4.0 and 5.0 which work fine for most 5.0 version things etc. want to dab in 6.0 water then DBtech can help you. NFS you have to install it for your os of choice by the way and set up. (think this was mentioned in the 5.0 video from Technodad btw) Yes, the confirmation can get on some folk's nerves but is there to make sure you don't mess up. and to always check twice do once.

  • I am trying to get a pile of video files off an Apple Mac Pro, onto a Linux based NAS, and expected some issues. This OPENMEDIAVAULT (OMV) software is supposed to be easy. IT IS NOT. Instead answers online are for older versions of the software. YouTube is worse. Starting off the ISO would not load on my Ryzen machine without a special iso thumbdrive formatter. Got it up and working, then came the real challenges. I've finding file transfers very slow with Samba, and I've been unable to get NFS working--it is enabled in software, but command line query shows NFS won't even start on the server side. Everything has to be done through the web interface. Hell I can't even delete files when I do transfer them--once again permission issues and error messages, file in use when it's not, and others. Older versions have some sort of permission reset. I found one fellow wrote a script for permissions reset on a chron script. Should I try that next? I'm trying to troubleshoot why it is so slow on a 10G fiber network with powerful machines and plentiful resources. My limitation should be the hard drive throughput. The whole point for having a NAS is fast file transfers. 17 hours to transfer my 275GB of music? Nearly 24 hours to format a 16TB mirror Raid? I can do this in my Mac in a couple of minutes. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? NEARLY 24 hours to build a mirror? WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO FAST FORMAT ON EMPTY DRIVES! I have the hardware, the software is subpar IMO. If you want to spend 30 hours trying to figure out WTF is happening and why it won't work, based on discussions for older versions of the software. HAVE AT IT. I was expecting a quicker solution and now I'm thinking about other options. Maybe the smart move is version 5.0 Next what if you have a complicated file structure? THERE IS NO WAY TO SET PERMISSIONS FOR ALL OF THEM AT ONCE using their software. It is one folder at a time. Plus the process includes a tedious and slow confirmation, click save then move your mouse way over there, wait for confirmation check mark, click check mark, and them move is way back the other way to finalize and click OK. You can copy permissions from another folder, but it still a tedious process. Two confirmations? To make a folder? WTF? JUST DO IT ON ONE CLICK. YOU ARE NOT DELETING ANYTHING. THERE IS ZERO RISK MAKING AN EMPTY FOLDER! For other changes, don't ask for a confirmation, people can change it back if they want. So why does it take so many steps to do all that? Now imagine having to create a 20 folders. Imagine wanting to add one permission and having to step through all that every time for every permission. I thought I was home free with the install. Nope. If I get NFS working, I'll have to do all of that ALL over again--they have to be different folders. I like puzzles but this is mostly taking many steps backwards. I can deal with the tedious repetition. I can deal with one-time slow formatting. I can't deal with slow transfers, which is a common complaint, a server processes that won't start, and endless permission issues. Start with just two folders one for SMB and one for NFS. I just tried changing some permissions to open up everything for read/write and it would not accept that. WHY NOT? It is lots of guessing, with inadequate information online referencing older software, and that is cryptic, and falling back on the user, you, to try to guess what will work, hoping something will work! I don't see how to reset permissions which is the nightmare of this program. Do I have to delete every folder to delete the contents and then share it all over again? Not sure, but why should I have to go to that step. There needs to me a detailed write up on permissions for configuration on the server side, and notes for Mac and PC. I got the PC side working. MAC took longer and I am not even sure what I did that effected the changes. I think it was using a fixed IP addressed, a comma separated list of specific IP addresses instead of the 192.168.1.0/24 format. Oh, and how do you change your web logon password in version OMV 6.0? They changed the location from the menu side to the gear icon--different from earlier versions. Much of the problem solving I see is for older versions. I tried some of the older settings and those did not work. Error logs flash and disappear to fast to read, (ever heard of a delay?) and you have to copy to a clipboard, and then drop it in a text editor, just to read them. Why not just make it so the log entry can be opened and viewed so people read it on the spot, without taking many more steps? It is almost there software, but frustrating and slow performing. Some of the info I read about speeding it up, is written for older versions. This all needs to be tossed out and re-answered for the current version. Or make forums for each version? No doubt future versions will be better.
  • Too difficult for nubies but you get the hang of it
  • I have been using Freenas for almost 4 years now in my office in different configurations and uses also we have some build-in appliances for backup purposes. I installed OMV in my home to eliminate a bunch of USB drives and internal hard drives with a lot of history. With 2 TB RAID1 and weeks after extended with 2 additional 4 TB RAID, so far the experience has been really good. One positive point is that IS a server and using Docker it is possible to install additional programs and add ons for backup, anti-virus, etc. things that was not possible in other solutions. The installation is easy and the configuration was not so hard, as usual, a learning curve is needed, but after the configuration is done, just leave it on and forget about - as I did with my 3 FreeNAS solutions. In terms of support, well, as many GNU there is a lot of resources in the net and in the official page, almost every single question I had before, during, and after the installation had a video or a long post explaining how to. MY RECOMMENDATION. read the samba documentation for windows shares, Samba can be a little bit time-consuming service and speed eater if not configured well, I was a little disappointed at the beginning for the low transfer speed even using Giga LAN adapters, but digging a little I found that SAMBA needs to be tuned up changing some lines in the (/etc/samba/smb.conf file. in my case, i just added:: socket options = TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY SO_RCVBUF=131072 SO_SNDBUF=131072, and all was solved since that moment.
  • I have been using OMV now for a couple of weeks. It is a real test for me since I am completely windows oriented, and Debian is total greek. However I have had fun learning, and the step by step guides are pretty good, but as always there is some missing items that could make the experience much better. My stab at creating a NAS/Cloud/home server has resulted in me going half crazy, but I still love doing things like this! That said I want someone to help me fix an error, but currently the OMV Forum isn't available until mid week, wouldn't you know it. By the way I am 75 years old, but have worked with computers since the early 70's, and still love to dabble. I can't load the dashboard, as I get a sockets error before the program loads. If anyone has a solution on how to fix it, please share it with me. tjcl@me.com. Thanks so much.
  • Probably the best free backup server/NAS solution. Works flawlessly on my company's Dell Poweredge T410. We also have another OMV sever running on a low specs PC. Installation on the Dell Poweredge T410 wasn't straight forward but only because of Network Card driver issues with Debian. Support Forums are very helpful and considerate of newcomers like me. I hope they make it run on Ubuntu.
  • Does not install correctly on Ryzen2 system. Never boots after install. Non-descript error leaves no clues as to what is happening.
  • OMV 3 & 4 was just bearable, despite the many problems. In itself a project with a lot of potential with Debian as backend and also free of charge... Unfortunately, however, in many points wrongly converted and with a totally bugged WebGUI/Frontend hardly to bear.
  • Very good project for home computers
  • Setup an account on SF just so I could give a 5 * rating. Used OMV for years now. Stable/consistent, plenty of features, etc. It's an open source platform with the stability of a commercial platform, at least in my experience.
  • Wow, great work. Easy to install and maintain if you have little Linux skills (I am using Debian and OMV on top). Great web frontend for administration, lots of addins. Thank you!
  • Very nice project. And I know how hard it is to get things running. What I miss is a nice frontend or configuration plugin to set up professional services using OMV. Even it would cost something. If you are familiar with Debian it is easy to get around with some early bugs. Waiting for more.
  • Hi, Seems to be a promising project. Unfortunately it did not work for me, it was a waste of time. I wanted to switch from Freenas to Openmediavault for the virtualization using Virtualbox and using a RAID 1 for my data. First of all, you have to find the default login/password, would be great to display it after the installation, how to change that password? It is not clearly indicated. The interface lacks of explanation of forms and options. Problems on the version 4.1.3: - a lot of error message throwing on the interface with access problem to tmp files (I don't remember exactly the error). - What I don't understand is why do we have to apply a configuration after we saved it? Isn't it possible to do it automatically ? - There is a transparent div stuck in the end of the body which I guess is the background of popup windows. I have to go in the html inspector to delete it and get the control again. It happens sometime after I close a window. - The thing that frustrated me in the all is the incapability to create a RAID, I don't even understand why I can see physic HDD, I can create new volumes but I cannot create a RAID. No hard drive displayed. So I searched on google, found the solution on the official forum which is OMV extra (dead link, so had to search it on the official site). I downloaded and installed the plugin, a painful to install it throwing a lot of error. Rebooted the machine and voila installed without any error. But surprise, there is no Backports tabulation as expected in the plugin... Ok, I assumed that version is too young and still unstable, so I tried the version 3.0.94 which is the one proposed as main link. In a word "unresponsive", nothing works on it except the authentication. It worked for some of people but for me it was a real waste of time and a bad experience, I would prefer to stay on Freenas. My last and better option would be Denbian and the command lines which I am going to do. As I said, this is a promising project, still too young though. Developers need to think to perform deep tests and before publishing a version.
  • Started using openmediavault as a NAS server quite a while back. It is pretty easy to use for me and is still a constant learning curve when bugs an issues arise. This is helped by a really good support forum with a wealth of knowledge and answers. Overall if you want a straightforward NAS server to file store, run media from, run virtual machines this is pretty good for it.

  • Awesome Project/Software !!!!!! Check out my tutorial about it at: myhowtosandprojects.blogspot.pt/2016/12/raspberry-pi-nas-openmediavault.html
  • Has an huge amout of Software packages and is User Friendly. Use Ubuntu server before this and have a Qnap, but OMV is defenitly the best one out there.

  • I recently bought an Odroid XU4 to use it as a personal NAS, and I have been using the OpenMediaVault OS since then. The easy installation, the available plugins, and the quick and good support of the people investing their efforts in this project, makes a wise decision to stick to it instead of any other sollutions.
