  • Interview with Open Elms MD Emil Reisser-Weston

So Emil why the name Open Elms? Hello, there are two reasons for this. Open Elms is an Open Source e-learning Learning Content Management System hence Open Elms. Also profits from merchandising are donated to an environmental charity Tree Aid. Sounds perfect, so whats the catch? Its funny because thats the common first response. Why give a commercially available LCMS away for no charge? The answer simply is there is no catch. As an e-learning development company our primary focus is selling off the shelf courses and developing bespoke e-learning. We dont currently sell the e-CMS and e-LMS tools which make OpenElms, but instead bundle them in for free as part of any sale. So we thought what better way of making our content available than putting it out on an open source basis. Furthermore there is more to be gained by offering consultancy, training and support to the e-learning community than by actually selling the core software. But if you are giving away your Learning Management System is it any good? How does it compare with commercially available packages? The LCMS is currently used by many large corporate clients and is in its 5th version. The system has features you would expect in a good enterprise level LMS such as security profiles, automated emails, management reports and a full audit trail of activities. Indeed we first went down the route of making a SCORM Learning Management System five years ago because the business LMS systems on the market were either difficult to use or lacked sufficient functionality that our clients needed. Additional workflow features (tracking tasks, email alerts etc.) have been added which you will not find with in other Learning Management System on the market. What would you say the Open Elms system lacks over other LMS? Its always hard to pick holes in your own product but I would say that it lacks some of collaboration tools such as forums and chatrooms. We also do not have ROI indicators or skills profiling to the extent of other commercially available Learning Management Systems. In our defence I would say that the development of the system has been entirely in response to the needs of our clients which have been more concerned with business process and the quality of the e-learning produced. As a result the software is very easy to use; that said if the Open Elms community requires these features then they will be added. And why the Content Management System? Again it was in response to a lack of suitable tools available on the market. Our employee induction e-learning courses require the client to be able to customise the e-learning content after delivery. Images, text, colours, fonts etc all needed to be changed as the business or workplace changes.. This business need has lead to the production of the e-CMS. So how does the Content Management System differ from standard development tools such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver? The difference is two-fold. Firstly the system is very easy to use. No programming experience is necessary, simply select a template, customise the text and images and off you go. Secondly the system takes care of the necessary SCORM calls which communicate with the Learning Management System. There is no need to fuss over the building of an index (or manifest file) for each course this is done automatically for you. You say you use templates. Does this mean that the content is PowerPoint like? No, no, no. 100% no. Our company has always adopted the design mantra e-learning not e-reading. The Content Management System produces e-learning which is of a highly professional standard. e-learning enables the user to interact with the content and discover the learning objective of each screen through multiple layers of multimedia content. There are many free courses on the Open Elms website so you will see what I mean from those. So can anyone use the CMS to create their own e-learning content from scratch? Yes, we invite all users to create their own courses and use them freely within their company. Indeed we ask the Open Elms community to submit their courses to us and we will make the best freely available on the Open Elms website. There are already over a dozen such courses dealing with induction and health and safety and the number is growing rapidly and will soon include ECDL and management training . These can be downloaded and used with any SCORM LMS. We have added additional optional functionality such as risk assessment and workflow systems which call outside the SCORM standard. These can be added to each course for a small fee, I must stress that these features are over and above those found in standard Learning Management Systems. At present Open Elms has a structured appearance. Wont this be lost with the design by committee approach required by open source software? There is a danger with open source software that it will grow with new functionality without a coherent design direction. You can see this in many open source products (and indeed traditional software as well) where usability and consistent design is sacrificed for feature rich functionality. At Open Elms we use a full time ergonomist to handle usability issues to ensure the user experience does not suffer. As such releases of the software will be carefully controlled and to result in a no decrement to the design. Thank you for your time. Final Word The success of the Open Elms project will rely largely upon it offering something entirely new to the business world. Making something free is simply not enough to make companies cast away existing Learning Management System systems which are firmly entrenched in organisations. If Open Elmss Content Management System can succeed in offering a quality e-learning creation tool then this might be a step in the right direction. I look forward to seeing a review of the software in upcoming editions. Thank you for your time . You can visit www.openelms.org for further information or to download the system.
