The binary vmware tools obviously lag current kernels and in large ESX clusters of linux machines it is sometimes not very feasible to keep patching ESX or wait until the binaries are available. Loving the fact that it made it into the ubuntu distro and I can just apt-get it ;-) Don't run a vm without them, the performance impact is enormous.
