Basmati-style Group Grades

  1. 2006-09-22 21:21:31 UTC
I've looked through the FAQ's and forums, but I can't seem to find an answer to this: does OnlineGrades support anything equivalent to Basmati's Group Grades?
    Thanks!

No, that was one feature that did not make the jump, though the database tables are present in Online Grades.

Can you explain how they work and what the benefit is?

    Hi Sam-
I'm not sure how other people use groups, but here's how they're useful to us: our students participating in sports need to maintain a certain GPA in all classes. Without groups, our administrators have to pull up all students one by one. With the use of groups we can allow an administrator to pull up say "Varsity Volleyball" as a group, and see all students in that group, along with all grades for each student. You can also select a certain GPA cutoff to see all students who fall below say 70% in one of their classes.

I've modified the basmati pages to work with OG (since the table still exists) and it seems to work fine. Let me know if you'd like a copy of the pages.

    Thanks!

Ahh, that makes sense. In the past we have suggested that a special parent login could be used in a similar situation.

Please, tar.gz or zip the files up and send them my way. I'll send you an email via Sourceforge with my direct email address.

    Thanks!

What is the latest on this? I would like to use groups for the sports angle as well

    What timing!

I just started reviewing the code last evening. It is going to take some time for me to totally digest what "evilpluto" passed over and make additional changes to get it to work well in the Online Grades environment. What he packaged up is a good start (and seems to work!), but more work is required.

There is probably another 8-16 hrs of work that needs to be done, including (eventually) some documentation updates.

One question on the groups front is whether all teachers logins in a school should be able to see all groups, or whether the groups should be "married up" to one or more teacher accounts like we do with parent accounts. This would allow the group to only be viewed by the teacher account that is given permissions to view it.

    Thoughts?

I don't see a problem with all teachers seeing all groups. It would seemingly simplify things. At least as far as the sports question, The coach, AD, principal, administrator, and maybe others all need to see the group. As the soccer coach, I really don't care about volleyball, and I'm sure the English teachers don't care about soccer.

"Groups" status update: I'm about 1/3 of the way through with updates to what evilpluto sent over.

I am leaning toward adding a school level option that would either allow everyone at the school to see the groups link, or not.

Grade Groups are now in CVS.
