Love it. Great to see people still interested in BBS's.
Wow... this is great software! For many years I ran a Renegade BBS and have returned to the BBS scene to find Mystic BBS alive and well. The software is constantly being worked on by a passionate author who is open to user feedback and actively works hard to incorporate requested changes in to the code. If you are looking to set up a BBS in 2014 and are after a feature set that is very impressive I suggest you give Mystic a go.
Finally avaialbe to the public in code form, this is one of the legendary (and last) BBS servers around. Mystic BBS offers a lot of flexability that other projects like this are painfully missing. No restriction on the name of a file in the filebases, easy to configure menus and endless customization options make it simple to set up a BBS. Mystic BBS supports the still active Fidonet (Echomail) as well QWK networks and comes with its own script langugage. An integrated telnet server as well as access to the BBS through SMTP, NNTP and FTP protocols makes it easy to use the system from modern mobile devices. Also, there is support for multiple languages, which again simplifies the effort to build a multi-language system. I've been running a small BBS based on another software for many, many years but have finally switched over to Mystic. And I feel happy with it.
I run my BBS headless on a virtual server in a date center 800 miles away, but with Mytic's NodeSpy running through SSH in a terminal window, I can see what's happening and control my BBS with the same level of control I had over my Telegard BBS in the early 90's! What an awesome feeling to see who is on what node, what they are doing, and even pull them into chat if you want. This in combination with this being a GPL open source project gives the Sysop vast amounts of control over their BBS!
Been using Mystic BBs software since 1999 and have played an active role in supporting this great piece of software. It's like the old underground bbs setups and can be easily customized to your needs. The project is very active and has some cool supports for it.
