Good latency (comparable to Skype) and bandwidth control, there also is a good configuration wizard for your microphone.

The new version of Mumble 1.2.1 client for OS X hangs on every Mac I install it on when I attempt to go to the audio configuration wizard. I expect better out of a download that is labeled "stable". The murmur server installation docs are wildly out of date as well.

Mumble is a great alternative to HQ Voice Comms for gaming. We use it heavily in our gaming as well as general communication. It is feature rich and works very well for being only in it's first release cycle.

Proprietary programs like teamspeak2 and ventrilo are outdated and overrated for years now and do not include any kind of security related features. Mumble includes encryption of both the audio and control channels, a PKI based authentication system and the ACL based channel administration. It will definitely take some more time for mumble to raise up (e.g. in connection with gaming- and social networks) but there is nothing that can stop it from spreading! Just keep up the good work men! Btw I really like the new PKI-style of the authentication system that has been implemented with the 1.2.0 release. And the ICE interface makes it still possible to handover management of murmur servers to web applications like administrative backends and so on... :-) quiet easy and works like a charm! congrats..

Love this!

So much better than teamspeak - thanks for building this

lovely.

A Charming package to install, no comparison to others out there. Would be nice to see the actual licensing identified easiily somewhere IE: BSD, GPL, LGPL or whatever it is.

Incredible features and performance compared to Ventrilo and TeamSpeak. It is a shame this isn't more widely used.

Mumble is the most progressive voice platform for gaming. It is a full generation ahead of Ventrillo, cross platform, and much less complicated to administer than TS3. Nice work.

Unfortunately, the community is very non-responsive. On older distros (where you don't have a choice to upgrade - such as Fedora Core 7/8), mumble won't compile and the static binaries won't run. Getting an answer from their forums so far has been an entirely fruitless endeavor. If anyone ever responds, I may turn this thumbs down into a thumbs up. I hear nothing but good about it - but I can't get it to work. Makes me feel bad as an administrator with > 10 years experience in production, enterprise-level environments.

The game overlay is a must-to-have that no other software have as I know. The better VoIP based server I used. Latency is very low (same as Skype) and sound quality is very good (Skype too), but with less memory occupation, and less bandwidth utilization. It's easy to use and configure, and the 1.2 branch is more easy to administer.

I had over 4 years of experience hosting a personal TeamSpeak server before coming across Mumble in May 2007, and Mumble smokes it in terms of quality and flexibility. It has a number of very unique and useful features that I haven't seen anywhere else. The core community is also much friendlier than the one I experienced on the TS forums. The developers are usually very quick to fix bugs and any simple features that they don't disagree with. It is my favorite application and I have been happy to donate more than most software would require me to pay. Unfortunately nothing is perfect, so I would need to give it a 9.9 out of 10.

The next generation VoIP is here! Very good latency (comparable to Skype) and bandwidth control, there also is a good configuration wizard for your microphone. The GUI is very clear and easy to use, making Mumble an excellent client side program! Server sided Murmur (server side of Mumble) is more difficult to handle. Setting up your own Murmur server with little expertise is difficult since the linux walkthrough is a bit vague and could do with some clearification such as simple guided steps and server specifications (what needs to be installed of 3rd party software etc.) Overall this project has a real good potential. The foundation is there, the details need to be worked on. If they succeed there will be no more Teamspeak or Ventrilo in 3 years time! 7,5+/10

Mumble has a much better voice quality (nearly as good as Skype) as TeamSpeak. Even the good quality codecs of TS (e.g. Speex 25.9 Kbit) are clearly worse than Mumble's voice quality. The is nearly not affected by Mumble (as expected for Game VoIP software).
