Multisetup will introduce an Apt / Yum based system for updating and upgrading the home networking application sever and multimedia platform. Its transparent and user friendly. No special expertise required. The goal is to eliminate the need for multiple reconfigurations for newly introduced multimedia application such as Freevo and MythTV. It is not a replacement for these multimedia applications but rather an enabling platform to aid wider consumer acceptance.
Multisetup features a Java application server for home networks. It acts as a multimedia acquisition and display manager in addition to its multiple OS switching and transparent system services roles.
Windows XP multi-user future may come sooner than Microsoft intended. While the company seems to agree that Windows XP needs some multi-user capabilities their plans are sketchy. Moreover it appears the only way to get multiuser XP will be through a purchase of an entirely new system -- part of the price for XP Media Center. As we predicted back in November last week MS announced plans to add multi-user to Media Center Edition for the fall release. XP Media Center Edition is bundled with hardware and the OS is not available for sale. Multisetup will provide an open source alternative (look for a beta in March). For those who can't wait for Multisetup there may be a way to enable the functionality in XP right now. Visit http://multisetup.sourceforge.net for more details on enabling multi-user / multi-sessions in Windows XP.
