Whoops, for a Windows ME master boot record the command should be
ms-sys -9 /dev/sda
However I think that i Windows XP master boot record is also able to boot a Windows ME partition.

Yes, you can use your USB adapter to repair the boot sector in the MBR, something like
ms-sys -m /dev/sda
(if /dev/sda is the device connected by the USB adapter)
The master boot record does not contain any code specific to the current machine to which it is connected.
However, if you have altered the partition table ms-sys does not repair the partition table. If that is the case you...
