Editor's Review

Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (MPC-HC), a derivative of Media Player Classic, is a no-nonsense alternative to the Windows Media Player. MPC-HC isn’t flashy but it works with nearly any media format. So dig out your old AVIs along with your modern H.264 and VC-1 videos, you won’t be disappointed. As for high-definition content, MPC-HC uses DXVA technology to pass decoding operations to your modern video card, enhancing your viewing experience. And MPC-HC supports both physical and software DVDs with menus, chapter navigation, and subtitles.

Product at a Glance

MPC-HC does not require any special configuration, just download it and go. There are dozens of user-friendly options to choose like a wide range of A/V formats. And you can design a default format with LAV filters or other DirectShow decoders that are based on the FFmpeg decoder. With MPC-HC you have the options to select an aspect ratio that matches your playback device and personal preferences. For example, the Pan & Scan mode crops videos to fill the screen without letterboxing by omitting portions of the image, which may be appropriate on some devices. Advanced users may use MPC-HC to configure the output renderer for video playback.

Here is a detailed breakdown of MPC-HC’s features:

Pros

Cons

MPC-HC requires no special configuration because it’s easy to use, and it supports DVDs with menus, chapter navigation, and subtitles. Even though MPC-HC is easy for most people to use, it would be nice to have some documentation or a forum for support to go deeper.

Thank goodness. Finally an alternative dvd player that actually does what it says it should do. It plays clearly. I was totally disheartened with Microsoft's exclusion of a media player for Windows 8.1 but I shall refrain from ranting as I'm sure it has been done many times before me. Thank you for this lovely, free piece of software that works.

Audio quality is horrible. Audio boost is horrible. VLC easily, without competition, beats MPC-HC audio performance. So much so, that I have abandoned the latest build. Though VLC can't play 4k, it sounds amazing. Can't say the same for Media Player Classic. Through your junk audio render-er into the garbage.

Much lighter and easier to use than VLC Player (which I also like) with almost as many options. Plays EVERY type of media file. Also lets you customize its splash screen and buttons which is super cool. @ jonbondy: Do you really need documentation? It's pretty easy to use.
