Monolingual is a program for removing unnecessary language resources from Mac OS X.
Just removing the language files freed up 1.5 GB - and as a note, since it's not clear in the readme, it appears that it's not just system language files that get removed. All applications have the selected localiasation files removed. What concerns me is the lack of documentation regarding removal of Architectures. While I'm comfortable removing language files, messing with the Architectures seems a little more risky. As always, before making ANY changes to your system files, ensure you make a backup !!
We need something like this for Linux and Windows! Lately, I've begun to think of Locale as a synonym of Cruft, which is a shame. I've nothing against folks around the world being able to use apps in their native languages; but isn't it interesting how many developers go to the trouble of translating their apps into 30+ languages (including some rather obscure ones) but can't seem to be bothered to make these translations optional even when the translation files end up doubling (and in some cases tripling) the distribution size of the application? This app will be especially helpful for anyone who needs a full featured virtual machine that can fit on a live DVD or pen drive.
good idea
wo
useful app thanks
fuck all
simply perfect - thanx
Cool stuff! I guess it should also be able to detect current state of machine. For instance when I delete some languages, I assume that they will be marked-up in the list. Thanks!
bricked my mac. had to re-install. keyboard input won't work, not even via VNC.
Excellent program to free up disk space.
Terrific, but I'd like it for Windows, too.
Quick, Simple, and easy to use. It freed up more than 1.8 Gigs of space.
I'm always curious where is my free space! Now I know how to find it. =)
very good software, I use it in leopard
I find it indispensable, keeping the HD load as light as possible and have recommended it to all Mac owners that I know. Can't it be made a default that all languages except English are auto eliminated?
EXCELLENT! It saved me 5.3 GB on my Macbook Pro! It was easy to install and use. Just click on every language but your own and clear your computer of superfluous languages! (although i admit I was tempted to keep KLINGON just for grins ;-)
unclear as to what the defaults are. Are the checked languages the ones that will be removed?
Great software especially for MacBooks with SSD!
While disk space is cheap these days, this just gets rid of data that is not needed by most and helps avoid potential corruption of unneeded files.
Well done. Of course, it gives you the rope to hang yourself. But a responsible use of this tool is a huge plus on disc space. We use it mainly to trim space on languages that we do not need.
Great way to quickly free up disk space in OS X.
Monolingual saves disk drive space on a Mac by removing unecsessary languages from the MAC and not voiding the warranty
