  ModSecurity with the GotRoot rules set has kept my little clan site safe for many years now. I wouldn't publish without it. Over five years of running a site on an extremely low budget home server, that started with a server operator who knew nothing about hosting web sites, and we have never been hacked once. And anyone who pays attention to server logs knows that hacking attempts are a daily occurrence for just about any website. I was lucky enough to find Mod Security not long after I started hosting the website, and I think Mod Security together with the GotRoot rules set can take a lot of the credit for keeping the site safe from hackers and spammers.
