  • 20030409 RE-RELEASE: MKS Version 1.0.5

Version 1.0.5 has been re-released as 1.0.5 (patched) - this release contans bug fixes in two areas: 1) MKS incorrectly identified itself as 1.0.4 2) There was a problem scoring items if the user had previously scored any other item. A seperate patch is available (1.0.5b) for use by those who had previously installed version 1.0.5 prior to the publication of the patched re-release.

  • 20030408 RELEASE: MKS Version 1.0.5

This release offers the following improvements over version 1.0.4: PROJECT POST SCORES: Initial comments posted to project folders can now be scored. This allows complex documents to be evaluated by a team by posting each clause as a separate post, and allowing each to be scored and discussed by those reviewing the work. GUEST LOGON BUTTON: This new feature allows you to allocate an MKS account as a 'Guest' account for one-click entry to an MKS system. This feature is demonstrated at our live test environment http://www.mirak.ca/mks/demo BUG FIXES: There are a number of bug fixes to improve the viewing of the site with older Netscape browsers and a correction to the File Upload routines when used with PHP 4.2.0 and later. MORE INFORMATION: Please read the release notes filed with the 1.0.5 release, or try the demo site out at http://www.mirak.ca/mks/demo

Version 1.0.5 has now been re-released with corrections in place at sourceforge as "1.0.5 (Patched)" A patch was released for use by those who obtained MKS 1.0.5 prior to 09/04/2003 and whose systems incorrectly identify themselves as 1.0.4. The patch contains two files: html.inc, and main.inc If you previously installed 1.0.5, and your system INCORRECTLY identifies itself as 1.0.4, you should download the patch files and place them in your MKS directory (default directory name: 1.0.5) If you have obtained 1.0.5 after 09/04/2003, and your system CORRECTLY identifies itself as 1.0.5, the 1.0.5b service patch is unnecessary. // ************************************ // * Version: 1.0.5 * // * Released: 08/04/2003 * // ************************************ New Features: 1) PROJECT POST SCORES Posts to project folders can now be scored by people other than the post's submitters. This only applies to posts directly placed in project folders; threaded posts cannot be scored (to keep number of iterations down to a sensible level). 2) GUEST LOGON BUTTON It is now possible to delegate an MKS system account as a 'guest' account by making changes to config.php for a site - when these settings are detected, MKS shows an additional 'guest' logon button which copies the username and password for the guest account into the form and submits it. The MKS adminisatrator should carefully configure the account permissions for the guest account before enabling this feature. 3) BUG FIXES Attachments were not correctly processed with PHP versions later than 4.2.0 - this has now been corrected. Thanks to Bo H Lee for detecting this problem. Voting on issues other than those automatically created by MKS in response to collaborative messaging requests generated an error message - no error condition existed and this has now been corrected. Some popup windows were not correctly displayed in NS 4.7 due to errors in HTML output. These problems have now been corrected, and all HTML code now carries DOCTYPE definition information to allow page testing by the W3.org HTML code validation service to enable these problems to be more quickly identified in future. 4) UPGRADING TO MKS 1.0.5 Replace old code with new. If the new code is to reside in a new directory as recommended for concurrent versions on a single server, you may need to change the $config_path_php variable in config.php If your system was upgraded to 1.0.4 already, you don't need to load the 1.0.5 Update file as there is no new data in this version. Otherwise, logon as Administrator, go to MKS Load Data and load the file displayed as "* 1.0.5_Update" // ************************************ // * Version: 1.0.4 * // * Released: 06/04/2003 * // ************************************ The originally posted MKS 1.0.4 had a problem with the address book and was replaced with a patched version of the html.inc file (internally identified as 1.0.4b) on 6th April 2003. The replacement 1.0.4b html.inc file has been released seperately as a patch for useby those who obtained MKS 1.0.4 prior to 06/04/2003 and whose addressbooks do not work correctly. If you have obtained 1.0.4 after 06/04/2003, your addressbook should work fine and the 1.0.4b service patch is unnecessary. // ************************************ // * Version: 1.0.4 * // * Released: 04/04/2003 * // ************************************ New Features: 1) CONTEXT-SENSITIVE HELP Many of the screens in MKS now include context-sensitive help, and this will be extended to all functions in later releases. Help is accessed by pressing the 'Help' link on supported screens, or via the ? icon on the main MKS toolbar. This loads very much faster than the word document equivalent, and a user may go directly to any section by means of the folder tree-based navigation system to the left. The navigation system employed is licensed for MKS. Please read the Credits page in the help system for licensing information. Areas currently context linked include: Logon, Create New Accouunt, Complete Survey, Personal Folders, Search, and Addressbook. Other areas will be added. 2) SIMPLIFIED USER PREFRENCES SCREEN All the statistics, user permissions and profile-based permissions are now collapsed into a folder structure. This makes for a much less intimidating screen for new users to have to deal with after completing their sign-up surveys. 3) OTHER INTERFACE IMPROEVEMENTS Click on folder names in Personal Folders to open them, simplified addressbook screen and Knowledge Browser, and Search now defaults to searching for Knowledge by Text to remove obstacles for new users. 4) UPGRADING FROM 1.0.2b / 1.0.3 TO 1.0.4 Replace old code with new. If the new code is to reside in a new directory as recommended for concurrent versions on a single server, you may need to change the $config_path_php variable in config.php Logon as Administrator, go to MKS Load Data and load the file displayed as "* 1.0.4_Update" (This file is actually named _1.0.4_update.sql if your curious to see what has changed). // ************************************ // * Version: 1.0.3 * // * Released: 31.03.2003 * // ************************************ New Features: 1) IMPROVED SUPPORT FOR PHP VERSIONS 4.1.0 AND LATER According to PHP documentation forwarded to us by Ruslan Shelekhov, later versions of PHP do not automatically copy request variables into the global scope as this is seen by some as presenting a security risk. This meant that some users found it tricky to get MKS working in newer server installations. A further problem is that although PHP 4.1.0 and later supports the recommended replacement methods, older versions of PHP do not. This release addresses the issue by adapting the operation of MKS depending on the version of PHP detected, and so MKS now works well in PHP environments which are installed as a server module, rather than requiring PHP to run in a CGI mode or have an entry like 'php_value register_globals 1' in the apache httpd.conf file. 2) IMPROVED SUPPORT FOR MYSQL VERSIONS 4.0.2 AND LATER mySQL Version 4.0.2 changed the permissions requirements for user accounts slightly. A user now has to be explicitly granted the right to create temporary tables, and MKS needs to create these to handle certain queries. Changes have been made to the installer to prompt a an MKS installation engineer to set these permissions for the database user. 3) UPGRADING FROM MKS 1.0.2b TO 1.0.3 Replace old code with new. If the new code is to reside in a new directory as recommended for concurrent versions on a single server, you will need to change the $config_path_php variable in config.php 4) UPGRADING MYSQL SERVER TO 4.0.2 OR LATER If you update mySQL at any time to a version later than 4.0.2, you need to run the following SQL commands as a mySQL administrator (e.g. root), taking the values for db_name, db_user, db_host and db_password from your config.php configuration file: GRANT Create temporary tables ON `db_name`.* TO 'db_username'@'db_host' IDENTIFIED BY 'db_password'; FLUSH PRIVILEGES; // ************************************ // * Version: 1.0.2b * // * Released: 30.03.2003 * // ************************************ New features: 1) UTF-8 CHARACTER SET ENCODING This release provides UTF-8 character set encoding for all pages as standard, and includes a new revision of the reset.sql file, containing new UTF-8 encoded translations for all presently supported languages. 2) UPGRADING FROM MKS 1.0.2 to 1.0.2b Place the new html.inc file in your MKS PHP directory. Replace the existing reset.sql file in your backup directory with the new version. Reset the database either by importing the new reset.sql file or deleting all tables in the system to force a reset. // ************************************ // * Version: 1.0.2 * // * Released: 27.03.2003 * // ************************************ New Features: 1) EXTENDED SEARCH CAPABILITY Users can now search for Knowledge, Issues, Projects and Messages (so long as these have been shared to or delivered to groups to which the user belongs) by means of a text pattern match. 2) OPTIONAL POPUP SCREEN FOR LOGGING ON USERS We use this on our demo environments to give a few details about what the MKS is to visitors logging on to these facilities. 3) SYSTEM VERSIONING The logon screen title now shows what version of MKS is in use and visiting the user preferences page calls up fuller system config information for handling support requests and bug reports more effectively. 4) VASTLY IMPROVED INSTALLATION PROCESS This is the big one. The installation process is now walked through step by step, and a very problematic and risky 'back door' system reset process has now been eliminated. Users should NOT use any version prior to 1.0.2 to avoid security risks posed by the install system. 5) UPGRADING FROM MKS 1.0.2 TO 1.0.2 Review the couple of additional settings in the config.php and replace all other files. To add the few phrasebook entries missing in previous versions, logon as administrator and import the upgrade_phrasebook dataset. If you can search for users, AND select other options in the search dialog without problems, the upgrade was successful. // ************************************ // * Version: 1.0.1 * // * Released: 22.03.2003 * // ************************************ New features: 1) PROFILE BASED USER SEARCHES Profile search button on toolbar allows you to search for other users by the profile attributes they have entered when completing surveys. The interface can be used to address new Message, Issue or Project items to matched users. This interface will be extended in future releases to allow other kinds of search. 2) PERSONAL FOLDERS REDESIGNED The Personal folders area has been changed to include two new top-level folder systems, and a redesign of the existing 'Personal Folders' display. Improvements were made for Netscape users whose browsers were not compatible with opening and closing of folders. Each time a user now changes folders, HTTP POST is used, to preserve all other form values (including filter values if set) Top level folder - 'By Type:' This shows all items of a particular kind (Message, Issue and Project items) in one view, regardless of what folder they happen to inhabit. Duplicate entries are not shown, for example, if you send a Message to yourself, you see it in both Sent Items and Inbox but you only see one entry for the message in the By Type: Message folder. No additional operations are available in this mode so neither the Folders Toolbar nor the Folder View panes at the right of the screen are displayed Top level folder - 'By Location:' This is the redesigned main 'Personal Folders' view seen in version 1.0.0. This shows all items in a given folder from the folder tree on the left of the screen, with a 'Folders' view on the top right to show any subfolders present in the selected folder. Top level folder - 'Favorites:' This provides quick links to locations in the knowledge tree, and the links cause a popup mode view of the selected category area. This is a demo-mode feature, and is not yet truly operational, however we welcome feedback on the concept illustrated. 3) SYSTEM CONFIGURATION CHANGES: The system now allows the option of sharing the bulk of the php code amongst a number of systems operating on the same web server. The only two files now required for each individual installation directory are: index.php (the file called by the webserver when a user accesses the system) and config.php (contains all site-specific settings, such as backup ident details and locations of all the different kinds of files used by the system. The files filter.php and sort.php are no longer required as their functions are performed elsewhere. // ************************************ // * Version: 1.0.0 * // * Released: 15.03.2003 * // ************************************ Notes: First public source code release
