ABOUT MeX Linux 64 bit LINUX Live DVD build 150214 NEWS/CHANGES 150214 All packages in MeX Linux have been upgraded to the latest version by 150214. Cairo-Dock has been replaced by Docky. The most important change is that I have replaced the install program Ubiquity with MeX Installer. The installation to hard drive is now so simple that a 10 year old child can do it. Watch a SLIDESHOW of the hard drive installation process: http://mex.exton.net/mex-installer-slideshow.html ALSO: Linux Mint 17.1 is based on Debian and Ubuntu 14.04. MeX build 150214 is based on Debian Jessie, Ubuntu 14.10 and Linux Mint 17.1. I have replaced kernel 3.16.0-28-generic with "my" special kernel 3.19.0-5-exton. MORE NEWS 150214 1. The MeX ISO is now a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred (copied) to a USB pen drive. You can then even run MeX from the USB stick and save all your system changes on the stick. I.e. you will enjoy persistence! I've found two scripts which make the installation to USB very simple. The scripts are quite ingenious. My tests show that they work flawlessly on USB installations of all normal Ubuntu systems. 2. Another big improvement is that MeX now can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 3 (Copy to RAM). When the system has booted up you can eject the disc (DVD). You'll need at least 2 GB RAM to run MeX that way. I.e. superfast! Used KERNEL The latest original Ubuntu kernel 3.16.0-28-generic (for live systems) corresponding Kernel.org's kernel 3.16.4 has been replaced by "my" special kernel 3.19.0-5-exton (corresponding Kernel.org's kernel 3.19.0). The best thing with kernel 3.19 is that it has better support for the open-source Nvidia driver Nouveau than any other older kernel. DESKTOP ENVIRONMENT MeX uses Cinnamon 2.4, developed by the Linux Mint team. The system language is ENGLISH. PASSWORDS and login The passwords for root (superuser) and mint (normal user) is root respectively mint. When you start up MeX from the live dvd/USB stick you will end up at MDM's login screen. Log in to Cinnamon 2.4 as the ordinary user mint with password mint or as root with password root. When logged in as mint you can use Sudo to become root. Command: sudo su. After a hard drive installation you can't log in to Cinnamon as root from MDM's login screen. PROGRAM content etc. To make it possible to run MeX from RAM I have kept down the number of installed packages. The MeX ISO file is of 1260 MB. The ISO size has increased a bit because of me installing Google Chrome (to make it possible to watch Netflix movies). All packages have been updated to the latest available stable version as of February 14, 2015. INSTALLATION to hard drive Note that you in advance (just in case) should create a partition of at least 7 GB for MeX and a SWAP space double the size of your computer's RAM. I.e. if you have RAM of 1024 MB or less. If you have RAM of 2 GB or more it's enough with a SWAP space of 2 GB. The installation program in MeX (MeX Installer) is otherwise "intuitive". Choose manual partitioning and select the partition you created in advance for installation. USB installation You can use UNetbootin in Windows or Linux. There's other ways to do it, but using UNetbootin is the best/safest way. I.e. if you want to do it in Windows. One file has to be replaced though - see http://mex.exton.net and http://mex.exton.net/mex-usb-persistent/ ABOUT NetworkManager and WIRELESS configurations Use NetworkManager to configure your wireless network. It works perfect. UPGRADE Cinnamon and other packages If you install MeX Linux to hard drive you will always get the latest package versions if you run the following commands: "sudo apt-get update" then "sudo apt-get upgrade". USB installation Read my instruction: http://mex.exton.net/mex-usb-persistent/ (About the best way to perform a USB installation).
