I find this software very flexible. Sure there are bugs, but this is software that is being developed all the time with several releases per month. I found it complicated and erronous at first. After checking other less buggy software I found out it is the only tool that is flexible enough to complete my various encoding tasks without the need to write batch files while still retaining decent level of control. A pity it is not open source anymore.

By the developers own admission this is now CLOSED source and therefore should not receive privileges from sourceforge. Worse it now contains both malware (adware) in its extensions and bundles with Open Candy to trick users into installing toolbars during application install it is nefarious and ought be boycotted until it returns to OpenSource thereby not being in GPL violation

According to Wikipedia's mediacoder entry (retrieved 11/Jan/2012), prior to 2008 mediacoder was "free and open source". This strongly suggests it was issued under a copyleft license, and all copyleft licenses are necessarily irrevocable. E.g. under the GNU GPL, afaik a developer is entitled to make and distribute non-copyleft improvements without the source for the improvements, but any distributor of the new work is legally obliged to provide sufficient source code as to readily allow compilation of the original copyleft version. Thus afaik if the original version was copyleft, the developer, sourceforge, or any other distributor cannot legally distribute the improved non-copyleft version without making equally available at least the complete source code for compiling the original copyleft version. Furthermore, although sourceforge is not legally obliged to continue to serve a copyleft project, I think that considerations of goodwill (and hence good business sense) suggest that they should do so so as to discourage illegal behavior by developers. Copyleft is not only a legal contract, it is a social contract, and 'bait & switch' tactics leave a sour taste in the mouth. Mediacoder's developer may decide to act illegally, but if sourceforge enables such bait & switch tactics it will be vulnerable to being replaced by an organization that adheres to the spirit of copyleft software. If anyone can point us to an earlier copyleft version, then afaik anyone else could upload it as a sourceforge project, and all of us could download it. Or sourceforge, could you please make available the latest copyleft version in your archives.

As of December 2009, MediaCoder is no longer open-source. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaCoder.

I think people are getting confused by the fact that SourceForge is placing a big ad for AVS and sometimes other media converters on the page with nice, big Download Free buttons, while there is no download for Mediacoder. It looks like the actual app we're looking for has been taken down.

It is proprietary software. Why is it still on SourceForge?

very good project

I'm still looking for video coding that works, and can handle a few bells and whistles (subtitles). I thought briefly this was it, but its really just gone to crap. there's an "update" 4 times a week to get you on the website to look at advertising. though it does mostly work, it is very hard to use (even if you know what you're doing) and I can't get the videos to play back on my phone, no matter the settings (of which there are too many to count), so there are issues with its encoding. also, apparently, (now seems obvious) closed source.

Shame, it was a good project until I found out about the GPL violation and the project going freeware.

Close-source, adware…

1.Project is now closed source, so it does NOT belong on SOURCEforge. 2. MALWARE in this new closed source version. BEWARE! DO NOT DOWNLOAD.
