	README

xfig+fig2dev-3.2.8.tar.xz contains the sources for the interactive
drawing program xfig and its backend, fig2dev. Fig2dev is necessary to
enable xfig to export figures to various output formats, such as eps,
pdf, svg, windows metafile, tikz, pict2e or pstricks macro language for
TeX/LaTeX, and many others. To install, untar, cd to the xfig-* and
fig2dev-* directories and type in both
  ./configure; make; make install.
INSTALL files in both directories contain a more detailed overview of
the installation process. The tar files xfig-3.2.8.tar.xz and
fig2dev-3.2.8.tar.xz contain the components separately.

Currently, xfig seems to be the only available graphical tool that is
able to create high-quality graphics with tikz. The output from
  fig2dev -L tikz -P fig1.fig fig1.tex; xelatex fig1.tex
is nearly identical to
  fig2dev -L pdf fig1.fig fig1.pdf
The differences are slightly smaller lines in pattern fills in the
tikz-output than in the eps or pdf output. When using the tikz or pict2e
output language, postscript and tex fonts can be inserted into the same
graphics. Using xelatex as the tex-engine, both eps and pdf-images can
be imported.
