IMPORTANT

On RPM-based systems the minimum set of packages that must be installed are the two starting with maxima- and maxima-exec-clisp- followed by the numbers of the version.

Since they both depend on each other, they should be installed with a single rpm command:

   rpm -ivh maxima-x.y.z-n.i386.rpm maxima-exec-clisp-x.y.z-n.i386.rpm

or (for 64-bit RPMs)

   rpm -ivh maxima-x.y.z-n.x86_64.rpm maxima-exec-clisp-x.y.z-n.x86_64.rpm

Clisp and Gnuplot should be installed in your system.

You may also want to install maxima-xmaxima-..., which provides the Xmaxima graphical interface and a graphics program needed by some commands such as plotdf and ploteq.

The maxima-lang-LL-... packages, where "LL" is a two-letter language code, provide translations of the manual into various languages.

On debian-based systems maxima-common and a maxima-<lispname> should be enough to get maxima itself working. An installation of a separate lisp is not needed in this case, but gnuplot is needed for plotting here, too. In case packages on the system tell to have other dependencies it might be required to install the other .deb packages, as well. On debian-based systems the command that installs packages is

sudo dpkg -i <the names of the packages>

The .appimage files are complete installs of maxima and a front-end in a single file. Just download the file, set its "executable" bit and execute the file.
