  I use both LPRng and Cups on the same server. Cups is good for supporting a lot of different printers, but the lpd server from LPRng does a lot of things better. Had problem building the 3.8.33 release on Redhat EL5. but the 3.8.A release still build fine. Part of the problem with the 3.8.33 is that there is no apparant easy way to disable the automatic setup stuff, which tries to trash my Cups setup.
