This is a fix to the current install_logwatch.sh file to make it compile and work on a Macintosh 10.6.X system or higher: If you run the script on the Macintosh you will get the error like this: ### Installing install_logwatch.sh: line 179: munge_gzcat: command not found makewhatis: illegal option -- s Next there are two Lines you have to edit. If you do not you will get errors during the install. The first one is : vi install_logwatch.sh on line 179 change this line from this: munge_gzcat = 1 to : munge_gzcat=1 next you need to goto line 281 of the script and change like from this: makewhatis -s "5 8" $MANDIR to: makewhatis -o "5 8" $MANDIR Now you are ready to install without any errors at all. Hope this helps others and hope that the other versions that are produced has these fixes in them.

I am a long time user of Kirk's software, dating back to the autorpm days For unclear reasons this project has not been a part of the core Red Hat Enterprise product in its current incarnation, although the package is carried in their Fedora Project. RHEL 6 has a somewhat older: logwatch-7.3.6-49 -- RawHide: logwatch-7.4.0-26.20130522svn140 It is useful to update logwatch, as new patterns are added over time to respond to changed in error messages observed Forking an installation to update to current is extremely low risk ; that RawHide variant builds trivially [there are minor installation dependency additions: ] -- as to risks, it, after all, only reading logs and emitting stdout content ;) All needed SRPMs are at: ftp://ftp.owlriver.com/pub/mirror/ORC/logwatch/ Highly recommended -- Russ herrold

Hi, Actually, i'm doinng a study between different tools "Open Source" for manage and monitoring logs, and i should give a report to my head. I'm searching more information about "Logwatch", the tool seem very useful whereas there is enough information on it, i search more information about logging and log managment: - Centralized , - Distributed logging, - Log rotation & retention, - Systems logs, - Security logs, - Performanace logs, - Application Logs. Is the tool able to ensure all these fonctions?. Thank you at advance.
